Information by and for dBASE/xBASE users.

The UK User Group has been in existence for many years Its activities include informal monthly meetings, the maintenance of this Web site and help to UK xBASE users when they meet problems.
Meetings The UK User Group is still allive and kicking! Meetings continue to be held at Bisley in Surrey. We aim to meet monthly, on thefirst Tuesday of each month but dates will vary to fit round the availability of members. New members are very welcome but do check dates first if you plan to come come along. See the Meetings page for maps and directions.

New On-Line Free Code Library. Until recently there seemed be little opportunity for dBASE Web applications in the UK. We are not aware of any UK ISP who offered the dBASE Hosting service it has been assumed would be required. However it has now been found possible to host a service on one's own server via an ordinary UK Broadband connection. Probably not suitable for heavy duty requirements but it so far it is working fine for more modest applications - and there must great potential scope for these.
The new Library is running on an ordinary 512k Broadband connection and a Dell PC being used as the server. Windows 2000 or XP Professional running IIS is recommended although any Windows based Web server that supports CGI should be OK. Plus of course dBASE. The operation of the web server and dBASE places no heavier demands on hardware than a normal dBASE installation. Suggested minimum hardware spec would be 1GHz Pentium, 256MB memory, 40GB hard disk although we know of situations where an old 550MHz Pentium 3 server is providing adequate performance for a small dbase web app. As regards server configuration, it is best to use the so-called web applet approach mentioned in the dBASE OLH and it is highly recommended to "lock down" any Web servers to security levels recommended by their operating system and Web Server vendors. For example the IISlockdown tool provided by Microsoft. Remember, that if your server is publicly available (rather than an Intranet) then it will be attacked sooner rather than later.
The first two items in the Library are the PRG files actually used and so serve as an example of how it operates.
The Free Code Library is designed to serve two purposes. First, to act as a working illustration of how an inter-active site, using a dBASE DBF tables and code, can operate on a Broadband connection and Home/Small Business server. Second, to provide a facility for developers to post small programs, code snippets etc. that they feel may be useful to others. The Library is not intended to compete in any way with the excellent duFLP library but rather to compliment it as a repositary for items that may be considered as not really suitable for duFLP.
Anyone can Login to select items in the Library, view the code and of course to copy and paste for their own use. We are very much hoping that dBASE programmers will apply to be registered as users, all are very welcome. You will then be able to Login using your ID and be able to add, edit and delete your own material. This includes, if you wish, just entering some garbage to test how it all works! We are confident that the dBASE community will use this as a worthwhile Public Domain facility and not leave any "garbage" items undeleted or abuse it in any other way. To register as a user, please email Bob Rimmington (address below) with your name, suggested ID and any other relevant details.
As useful code contributions are made, the Library Supervisor will be able to Lock these from deletion. We hope this will be acceptable to registered users so that we can minimise admin but we are of course prepared to listen to users comments and suggestions.
Our thanks must go to Mike Walsh for creating the Library facility and to Frazer Spence for allowing us to share his web server http://www.staydontpay.net.
So why not now look at:

The dBUG Code Library

Search Facility and Site Map. See the foot of this page for a new Search facility for both this site and the Web overall. It also includes an option to view a site map from which you can also go to the page you want.
Our Hit counter is also worth mentioning, we are currently getting about 110 visitors a week, a figure we find very encouraging.

05/06/99 The group is prepared to try to get any dBASE user out of trouble. Such help is on a voluntary basis by members of the group.  We do not claim to be the world experts but if we can assist then we will.  Contact by email is preferred but if urgent we will accept phone calls, including evenings. But do not assume that lines are manned 100% of the time! Contact:
